General Strategy:
Use Spirit of Failure right away on a warrior or ranger - never a lack of them in CA. Then blind him/her with Signet of Midnight. If you can keep him/her blind and always have the Spirit of Failure active you will never be lacking for energy (gain 4 energy each time target misses and since the spell does no damage to the target he/she will almost certainly continue to attack). Use Arcane Echo then Fireball then start nuking all spell casters because their armor is usually crap so you get the fire damage as advertised on the spell descriptions - and you dont want your energy battery to go away until the end. Essentially this build will let you shut a fighter/ranger down and deal sufficient damage to make your team happy.
Notes & Concerns: [enemies with condition removal will render you energyless in no time. You are still a softy with little healing and crappy armor, but so long as you are not targetted by too many people at once you are good to go.

I'm a PvE'er but my only thought was that Phoenix has a long cast time so how bout something quicker like Incendiary Bonds? If Phoenix is for point-blank use, then how bout Flame Burst instead?
You know that Signet of Midnight is a touch spell also?

I agree here. Bonds or Rodgorts, there's plenty of other choices
and I agree..icky with touch spell. I don't like my casters getting anywhere with a spell that says "on touch" or specifys close range. Try something else for Signet or get a new elite, replace Phoenix maybe with Bonds or Rodgorts, or some other adjacent target nuke, and this build is pretty efficient.

On the other hand, if you like Signet of Midnight, then you could go Earth with armor spells or Water with Mist Form.
Of course, that would be a totally different build...
Staying with Fire, you could take Lava Font and other close damage fire spells. But you have to be careful, as you will be very vulnerable to attacks.

i prefer pheonix as a melee spell.. i know its designed as a range but it simply does almost double the damage as a melee. the initial "pheonix rising" damage (around 102 iirc) and then the impact damage (80 i think). inferno or flame burst simply cannot match that. ok it has a long recharge time but personally i dont hang around when ive got some hairy ar5ed neanderthal beating me with a large pointy stick! pheonix gives 'em a good whack to give them pause then i retire to range

You dont need arcane echo with that build. I recommend a healing spell or fire attunement. Also, you could use a better skill than sigent of midnight, such as what Mordakai said, mist form or something like that. Blindness is removed much easier than mist form, and also signet of midnight only blinds one person.
